Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi

In a not-so-distant future, city killer storms have decimated the entire region of New Orleans, virtually all of the North Pole has melted and fossil fuels hold a scavenge value that  makes lucky discoverers rich. A teenage boy, Nailer, lives at this time making a living as a ship breaker by scavenging ships with his crew. Like other scavengers, Nailer hopes to one day find a lucky strike to free him from this impoverished and dangerous life. Following a city killer storm, Nailer and his friend Pima find a schooner with a wealthy girl aboard whom they presume  dead. As they prepare to cut her fingers off to take the gold rings from her swollen fingers, she stirs. Nailer and Pima must decide to save her, and perhaps collect a ransom from her wealthy father, or to sell her body for parts. This is a great read for lovers of dystopian literature.
