The Cardturner

Jane    September 1, 2010

The summer after Alton Richard’s junior year looks unpromising. His girlfriend dumped him for his best friend. He doesn’t have any money or a job.

In Louis Sachar’s latest, The Cardturner, Alton’s summer plans get reshuffled. In trying to suck up to a wealthy, blind and ailing great-uncle, Alton’s parents have enlisted him to be his driver and cardturner for his bridge games. As time goes by, Alton learns a great deal about bridge, his uncle and himself.
