Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey is an amazing book. It made me laugh and cry and think and rage. It covers really tough topics – racism, injustice, hypocrisy, jealousy, abuse – but it does so beautifully. It also manages to be an interesting mystery, a sweet love story, and has one of the best friend stories I’ve read in ages.
I got a major kick out of Jeffrey and Charlie’s conversations on the audio version.
“I forgot. My dad is cooking dinner tonight because my stupid ma won’t come out of their bedroom…..it’s going to be a nightmare. Everything he cooks feels like phlem and tastes like pus that’s been soaked in brine. Salted pus, Chuck.”
For readers that like some depth with their fiction, this one is not to be missed.
