Best & Worst of 2011

admin    December 23, 2011

It’s that time of year when we start thinking back on the years’ books and deciding what we loved and what we hated (or, I mean…what disappointed us).

Biggest Surprise (in a good way):

Divergent by Veronica Roth

I almost made it through the year without finding that one book that I just couldn’t stop talking about.  Last year it was Mockingjay.  This year I read a lot of good books (Where She Went, Variant, Habibi), but no other book that made me want to call my friends and say “Get this book.  Read it.  Now.”  And then, just this week, I picked up Divergent because it made a lot of people’s “Best Of” lists.  I absolutely loved it (and devoured it in less than 24 hours).  I definitely think that it will be the next big thing.  I’m already counting down to the next in the series – Insurgent – coming May 2012.

So yes, I’m telling you…Get this book. Read it. Now. 🙂

Biggest Surprise (in a bad way):

Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

Okay, let me say that I was really excited to read this book when I first heard about it.  I love Bray’s other titles, and the premise sounded really cool.  Which was why (!!!) I was so frustrated by this book.  I didn’t think it was funny.  I thought the footnotes – yes, it has footnotes – were a bad bad choice.  And it went on and on and on and on…

I’ve read really good reviews by tons of other people, so I might just be in the minority on this one.  But – at least for me – it was a huge disappointment.
