SPEAK Up about Speak

admin    September 29, 2010

We know Laurie Halse Anderson as a fabulous author who has written some very powerful stories – Speak, Fever, 1793, Twisted, Wintergirls and many more….

However, you may not know that she is also often included on many banned and challenged lists.   There was recently a HUGE uproar (yes, huge), as an associate professor from Missouri State University equated her book SPEAK with pornography and published an article stating  that it shouldn’t be allowed in schools (he also took issue with Slaughterhouse Five by Vonnegut, and Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler).

Here, in honor of Banned Book Week, is Laurie Halse Anderson reading a poem she wrote using reader responses to her book SPEAK:

Have you read it?  What do you think about this latest attempt at banning  books?
